How to get started: STEPS 1 and 2 before masking making/storytelling
Step 1: You need to decide on what monster you want to create. The thesis of this whole project is that monsters represent the darker part of our humanity. What intrigues you about this?
I recommend falling down the internet "hole." Do a google search and see what comes up. Maybe you start with Vampire and end up at El Cuco...it's about finding something that interests and inspires you.
When you have your monster picked out- really start doing some research. What about this monster speaks to our humanity? What about this monster interests you.
CREATE A PRESENTATION
AIM:
To research a monster that interests you deeply.
To create a class presentation that communicates your interest to the class.
Here is an example of a research presentation that I made to help guide you to create yours. It can take any presentation form- I used GOOGLE PRESENTATIONS.
HERE ARE A LIST OF SLIDE IDEAS- you can pick and choose what you think BEST represents your monster OR mythological creature. I recommend using 6-8 of these ideas (or your own special idea) to have a complete presentation)
- The history of the monster
- The culture of the monster
- Why the monster is so important and what influence it has on people who know about it
- What the monster looks like
- The MOST SCARY part of the monster
- The lesson the monster is there to teach (if that applies)
- How the monster has changed over time
- Your ideas for what your version of the monster could look like
- What connects with you the most about your monster
- What does your monster REALLY represent for humans?
- Examples of masks or puppets that already exist
- A movie or video that your monster is represented in

Design CONCEPT
DESIGN CONCEPT and the DESIGN ELEMENTS
AIM:
To CREATE a design concept that utilizes the design elements.
To DISCERN meaning from the design elements and your monster.
Remember the design elements?
This time, you're going to apply them to your monster.
For example, my monster is greedy and weak and deeply evil. When I apply the element of COLOR to those emotions I can start making decisions about what MY version of the monster will look like!
Make sure you think about AT LEAST 3 design elements and you can name them and point them out in your design! That's what they're there for!!
Also, use the internet to HELP YOU. Feel free to steal and then modify other folks ideas.
When you do your design feel free to used some mixed media. You can collage, paint, draw etc. to make your monster! You CANNOT just print out a picture from the internet.
Check out this EXAMPLE!
Remember, you will be creating this design in 3D and in mask form so don't spend too much time on the body, focus on the face!
Here is the RUBRIC for the design!
When you are done, copy and paste your rubric into your google doc and come find me! :-)
