Introduction project: Make me laugh!
Before we get started on this comedy journey we need to start figuring out what makes us laugh and then we need to figure out WHY that is. There are lots of styles of comedy and performance. What are you most attracted to?
We will spend the first five days of class getting inspired and sharing that inspiration.
Our Essential Question for the week:
How do comedians make us laugh?

TASK 1: COMEDY JOURNAL:
This is how I will track your progress through the course. Please create a GOOGLE DOC and with the title of YOUR NAME COMEDY JOURNAL (ex. CAITLIN'S COMEDY JOURNAL)
Then share it with this email address: [email protected]
Make sure you actually click on my example, that's where your first assignment is! Also, feel free to just copy and paste my example into your new google doc.
I have an article for you- it's called "Where Do Jokes Come From." When you finish creating your journal come get it form me. It looks like this:

TASK 2: Bring in your Permission Slip! You can't move on without!
TASK 3: WATCH WATCH WATCH
Here is a link to some comedians that I think you'll like and relate to!
COMEDIANS
While you watch, I'd like you to start to keep notes in your comedy journal. This journal will be your BEST FRIEND during this process.
Keeping "notes" is a lesson we'll do in class together- but basically it looks like THIS.
I'd like you to watch AT LEAST 6 comedians. Click around, watch men and women, watch older comedians, watch comedians who differ culturally from you, search up your OWN comedians. Try to get a variety.
TASK 4: SHARE WHAT YOU WATCHED
Grab a partner or group of three and compare your notes. Share your favorite two comedians with them. As a group of two or three, decide on ONE comedian you think you'd like to share with the entire class.
For your presentation to the class, this is what you need.
1. A power point/prezi that inlcudes:
- The name of the comedian and some general information about them (where they're from, how long they've been doing comedy)
2. Your own description of their style of comedy- you can utilize resources on the internet for this, but I'd like to hear your OWN ideas in this. Here is an example.
3. A video of the comedian that you found to be HILARIOUS and you can't wait to share it with the class.
4. An answer to this question:
How does the comedian use their point of view to make a joke or to make you laugh?

TASK 5: FULL CLASS
"Analyzing comedy is like dissecting a frog. Nobody laughs and the frog dies" - Barry Cryer
"Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die" - Mel Brooks
These are two quotes by two famous comedians- what do they mean?
As a full class, let's take a moment to journal and then we'll have a Socratic Seminar around the question:
What do these quotes imply about the nature of comedy and the study of comedy?
What does it mean to be funny? How do we define comedy?
BUT WAIT....how am I being graded??
I will use your presentation to the class your journal and your participation in the socratic seminar as evidence for the following outcomes and learning targets.
Outcome
Communicate: Make ideas and information understood, mindful of audience, purpose and setting. Listen and respond to what others communicate.
Learning Target
Students refine their ability to communicate point of view and personal growth.
Outcome
Discern: View, read and listen with focused attention to what matters. Examine closely and methodically, attending to easily overlooked details, logic and patterns
Learning Target
Students Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
